Lake Bunyonyi
Lake Bunyonyi, located in southwestern Uganda near the Rwandan border, is a stunning freshwater lake known for its picturesque landscape of lush, green terraced hillsides and 29 islands. Often described as a place of tranquility, it is one of Africa's few lakes that is safe for swimming, as it is free of bilharzia, crocodiles, and hippos.
Its name translates to “Place of many little birds,” reflecting the over 200 species of birds that inhabit the area, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. Visitors can explore the islands by traditional dugout canoe, learn about the local Bakiga and Batwa cultures (including the history of the poignant “Punishment Island” where unwed pregnant girls were once abandoned), and use the lake as a peaceful base for relaxation after gorilla trekking in the nearby Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
